PSB Alpha P5 Speaker Review

March 18, 2019

PSB Alpha P5 Speakers

Price: $349.00 (March,2019)

Overall Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ¾

When I received PSB Alpha P5 speakers, I wasn’t expecting anything from it because it’s just a budget small speaker from very well known Canadian manufacturer PSB Speakers and my ultra budget favorite is Pioneers BS22, entry level budget is ELAC B6 and my favorite mini monitor is KEF LS50 speakers and I still own BS22 and LS50 speakers but ELAC B6 is long gone and I’m in midst of looking for replacement but I'm keep thinking something special might happen base on the reputation of PSB Alpha B1 mini monitor speakers and being upgrade to compete with fierce competitions, Original B1 had tremendous following and it was very popular among audiophiles as entry level budget speakers.

May be until high performing budget speakers from Pioneer, ELAC and Q Acoustics happened, looks like many manufacturers stepping up their game in entry level speakers because that is where most people will heard and buy from them, it is very important for any manufacturers to make good sounding and reasonably priced entry level speakers.

Build Quality: Alpha P5 was build very nicely with wood grain vinyl wrap with small yet stylish solid cabinetry, polypropylene 5.25" woofer with rubber surround, 3/4” Black Anodized Aluminum dome tweeter with 4th oder crossover. In my opinion build quality is on par with many five hundred dollars speakers in terms of quality components, I have not seen any speakers in this price range that comes with acoustically transparent perforated metal magnetic grill. And I can not find any negative thing to say about this PSB Alpha P5 mini monitors, perhaps biding posts were a little too close to each other, thats about it.

After 80+ hours of usage I stated my listening section with some of my favorite SACDs and Vinyls, Like of Dire Straits, James Taylor, Jack Johnson, Metallica, Grace Mahya, Diana Krall and may other different genre of music in my system.

Whats come to my mind was how good the balance of the speakers, I mean, I’m very impressed because how can this $350/pair of speakers have this kind tonal balance and high in fidelity with naturally accurate sound, this little speakers let me listen my music, makes me forget about evaluating speakers for this review. One night I started listening some vinyl LPs around 11pm and I went on listening album after album until 3am in the morning, I do not think there are any other speakers in this price range can do that to me and my music.

Highs are very clean detail sound with good extension without overly forward or laidback, separation between notes are a bit airy, good dispersion, may be I would love a little more instrument separation but there is some smooth lushness to it sound and it’s just about right.

Midrange is almost perfect, this is the best you can get at this price, everything sound as close as possible to source, naturally balance sound with accurate tone, musically engaging sound with great stereo image that I can connect to artist creation, nothing more nothing less, I couldn’t ask for more at this price point.

Bass performance is the star of overall musical sound signature because I get pretty well extended low frequency response from this mini monitor speakers but to get the maximum bass performance speakers without a sub woofer, should not be be more than 6ft apart with just a tad toe-in.

Bass is clean and goes lower than expected, very responsive tone with a touch of tightness to it, why is that? This is just a budget speaker to start with, you know what? PSB just step up the game with bigger step than others did, look at the size and price of the speakers, nothing to complain, after finish writing this review I’m just going to have another music section. I’m truly enjoying it! And I’m keeping it as my entry level reference monitor speakers.

If I have to nit-pick something, I would love more instrument separation from lower treble region and midrange area because thats where P5 can a bit lose out on definition and resolution when complex music passages happen, otherwise totally enjoyable little speakers.

Side Note, also tried with SVS Soundbase Class-D Amp which play very nicely with PSB Alpha P5 speakers, since this little speakers have good balance smooth sound signature makes them easy to pair with Class-D Amps like SVS Soundbase. Must avoid paring with laid back sounding amplifiers.

Great Value, Good Sound, Highly Recommended!
